Also known as the desert blonde tarantula, they live in Sonoran deserts of southern Arizona and northern Mexico. This particular species creates burrows or takes them over in order to create a home and feeding ground while other tarantulas are mostly nomadic, and while they do create 'nests' for themselves are rarely wander they can be seen in large numbers searching for females during breeding season. These Tarantulas are one of the most prevalent arachnids in the pet industry due to their docile and calm nature and long life spends, one of the longest of all tarantulas. Male Tucson's can live up to 10 years while their female counterparts can easily live up to 25, due to their slow maturity rate.
It is important while keeping Tucson's that you also consider their natural feeding cycle and diet, in the wild they eat a variety of smaller creatures so in captivity it is appropriate to feed them wax worms, crickets, roaches, and the occasional pinkie mice (as they grow larger). These Tarantulas only need food provided twice a week, such as 3 insects per feeding or substitute with pinkie mouse; and although most of their water requirements are met during their feeding a small shallow water dish should also be provided.
